Research shows that most companies still manage supply chain with phone, fax and email
An intensive study by Computer Weekly has found that large global companies still manage their supply chains by phone, fax and email and that digital supply chain management is still five years off for almost half of our largest global firms.
So while almost 50% of large global companies still communicate with their suppliers using ’analogue’ tools to order stock and process invoices, research from GT Nexus and Capgemini Consulting expects their supply chains to be more digital in five years’ time.
The study surveyed executives from large global manufacturers and retailers in Europe and North America, with 70% stating they have started a programme for digital supply chain transformation.
Within five years 95% of respondents expect more processes with suppliers to be automated and expect to receive more real-time status updates from across their supply chain.
It is surprising that companies are still so reliant on ‘analogue’ methods of communication, particularly in light of the globality and real-time nature of their businesses and the availability of web-based supply chain management platforms from MIQ Logistics and other leading vendors.

GT Nexus and Capgemini Consulting said the research brought to the surface the fact that more digital and platform-based supply chains will help hold companies to a higher ethical standard, and even enable the extension of credit to suppliers in poor countries who cannot get credit from local banks.
There is a role here for technology to provide complete supply chain visibility, from the factory to the shelves, to will help companies to be more ethical, efficient and effective.
